First – Rinse the Rice: Place the rice in a fine mesh sieve or bowl and rinse under cold water. Swirl the rice around with your fingers and drain. Repeat until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky.
Second – Measure Water and Rice: For most types of white rice, use a 1:2 ratio of rice to water. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of rinsed rice with 2 cups of water. Add a pinch of salt and a teaspoon of oil or butter for added flavor, if desired.
Third – Boil the Water: Bring the water and rice mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, uncovered. Keep an eye on it to prevent it from boiling over.
Fourth – Simmer the Rice: Once the water reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Let the rice simmer gently for about 15–18 minutes without lifting the lid.
Fifth – Rest the Rice: After the water is fully absorbed and the rice is tender, remove the pot from heat. Keep the lid on and let the rice rest for 5–10 minutes. This helps the rice firm up and become fluffier.
Sixth – Fluff and Serve: After resting, use a fork to gently fluff the rice. Serve warm with your favorite dish.
